My wife and I just returned from a week in Costa Rica, celebrating our 25th Anniversary, spending five days/four nights at Arenal Nayara. The hotel staff were all friendly, helpful and outstanding. They went above and beyond in every way. When we checked in early afternoon, our room ( which was great) had two nice double beds. .

From San Jose:
There are 3 different routes to reach Arenal from San Jose. Each one of them is different and all of them make a great drive to Arenal area.
1- San Jose-Alajuela- San Ramon- La Tigra-Chachagua-La Fortuna.
Driving time from San Jose: 3 hours
Take the Panamerican Highway #1 out of San Jose to Alajuela and keep straight. You will pass the Airport and continue straight for 40 kilometers until you see the sign to San Ramon. Exit there and drive into the town of San Ramon where you will look for the sign to San Lorenzo and La Tigra. You might find also the sign of Hotel Villa Blanca and Lands in Love, (these hotels are on the way from San Ramon to La Tigra) Follow the signs and continue the road from La Tigra to Chachagua and then into La Fortuna. When you reach La Fortuna follow the signs to Arenal Volcano. After La Fortuna follow the signs to Arenal Nayara Hotel & Gardens as if continue to the dam. Take a dirt road for 500 meters on your right at the entrance of Volcano Lodge also on your right.
2- San Jose-Grecia-Sarchi-Naranjo-Zarcero-Ciudad Quesada-Florencia-Tanque-La Fortuna.
Driving time from San Jose: 3 hours
Take the Panamerican Highway #1 north to Alajuela. You will pass the Airport and continue straight for 27 kilometers until you see the sign to Naranjo. Turn right and continue to Naranjo. As you arrive in Naranjo follow the signs to Zarcero and Ciudad Quesada. Once in Ciudad Quesada. follow the signs to Tanque and La Fortuna. After La Fortuna follow the signs to Arenal Nayara Hotel & Gardens as if continue to the dam.
Take a dirt road for 500 meters on your right at the entrance of Volcano Lodge also on your right.
3- San Jose-Alajuela-Poas Volcano-Varablanca-Cariblanco-San Miguel-Aguas Zarcas-Muelle-La Fortuna.
Driving time from San Jose: 5 hours
Take the Panamerican Highway # 1 north towards the airport. Once you have passed the Toll booth and the first street light take the exit to Alajuela just in front of the Airport and continue that road through Alajuela downtown. Once passing the town of Alajuela you will start to climb the mountains and see the coffee plantations that will lead you to the Poas Volcano. Before you reach the Volcano you will find a sign to Varablanca. Turn right and continue straight ahead until the next stop sign where you turn left to Cariblanco and San Miguel. Before reaching San Miguel follow the sign to Aguas Zarcas, Muelle, Tanque and into La Fortuna. After La Fortuna follow the signs to Arenal Nayara Hotel & Gardens as if continue to the dam. Take a dirt road for 500 meters on your right at the entrance of Volcano Lodge also on your right.
From Guanacaste (Liberia Airport):
Driving time: 4 hours
From Liberia Airport drive towards Liberia and at the next stop light turn right. Follow signs for the town Cañas which will be on your left after 46 kilometers. At Cañas turn left and follow signs for Arenal Volcano, follow signs for Tilajaran and then drive around the lake until reaching the Arenal Dam. After passing the dam continue straight, pass the Tabacon Hot Spring the the hotels Montaña de Fuego and Arenal Paraiso. At Volcano Lodge on your left take the dirt road for 500 meters and follow the signs for Arenal Nayara Hotel & Gardens.
