My wife and I just returned from a week in Costa Rica, celebrating our 25th Anniversary, spending five days/four nights at Arenal Nayara. The hotel staff were all friendly, helpful and outstanding. They went above and beyond in every way. When we checked in early afternoon, our room ( which was great) had two nice double beds. .

  • Make a photocopy of your passport and leave the original, your airline ticket and the bulk of your money in your hotel safe
  • Exchange money in your hotel and ask for part of it in small bills.
  • Avoid seedy areas of town —ask your hotel where these are located. If you find yourself in one— leave!

Costa Rica is a modern country, and most day-to-day necessities are readily available. However, if you plan to take full advantage of the wide variety of eco-tourism activities available, for your convenience, we recommend bringing the following:

  • Binoculars, Camera and Film.
  • Costa Rica Guide Book
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent
  • Light cool clothing—cotton or light synthetic.
  • At least one pair of pants for insect protection and dressier occasions.
  • Light jacket or sweater
  • Footwear- waterproof lightweight hiking boots, river sandals (Teva-type sandals) and comfortable walking shoes
  • Hat for sun protection
  • Sunglasses
  • Plastic water bottle for hikes
  • Flashlight with spare batteries and bulb for night hikes
  • Medication and travel sickness medication if necessary
  • Small day pack or fanny pack for hikes
  • Plastic garbage bags for wet items
  • Please pack as light as possible (limit 2 bags per person)
  • Bathing suit
  • Dry shoes for evening
  • Skirt or dress, ladies might want a change from pants for the evenings
  • Short sleeved t-shirts
